Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) was originally developed to support individuals with borderline personality disorder. Over time, DBT has been successfully adapted for children and adolescents, providing effective tools to help young clients regulate emotions, manage distress, and build healthy relationships.

This training introduces the core principles and skills of DBT, with a focus on practical application in therapy with young clients. Participants will explore ways to creatively adapt DBT techniques to suit the developmental needs of children and adolescents, ensuring these evidence-based strategies are accessible and engaging.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the foundational principles of DBT and its evolution.
  • Learn key DBT skills, including emotion regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness (plus walking the middle path).
  • Gain practical strategies to integrate DBT techniques into therapy sessions with children and adolescents.
  • Explore creative adaptations to make DBT skills engaging and developmentally appropriate.
  • Learn practical strategies to support skills practice outside of sessions.

Presenter:

Emma Spencer Emma Spencer is a Clinical Psychologist with 18 years of experience using DBT, from traditional DBT programs to private practice with children and adolescents. She is passionate about delivering neuroaffirming, practical interventions that support young clients in developing lifelong coping skills.
