Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an empirically validated mindfulness based cognitive behaviour therapy with a foundational goal reduce an individual’s “suffering” through the development of psychological flexibility. In 2016 Eric Morris and Linda Bilich-Eric proposed the SHAPE framework for supervision, based on the framework underlying ACT. Promoting psychological flexibility in supervision supports the development of competency-based skill development, specifically as it relates to the field of Psychology. The proposed ‘SHAPE’ framework includes 5 features that assist the supervisee to develop psychological flexibility and increase experiential learning through the supervision process and supervisory relationship.

Supervisors must be skilled in the process of supervision and work from a framework and perspective that promotes skill acquisition and self-reflective practice. The SHAPE model proposed by Morris & Bilich-Eric provides a sound and research supported structure from which a supervisor can create a safe and empowering space for competency-based learning and reflection to take place.

It is the goal of the proposed workshop to successfully educate and skill participants in the foundations of the SHAPE model, so that they can meet the needs of their supervisees as governed by the principals and competencies stipulated by the Psychology Board of Australia.

Core objectives of this Masterclass include:

  • Reflect current requirements of being a Board Approved Supervisor.
  • Discuss current, supervisory practices, strengths and areas of weakness.
  • Review ACT and Contextual Behavioural Sciences to ensure foundational theoretical knowledge is held by all participants.
  • Discussion of the development of the SHAPE model to understand support for its efficacy in achieving competency-based supervision outcomes.
  • Direct teaching and demonstration of the SHAPE mode.
  • Participation in role plays to practice the use of the SHAPE model and solidify theoretical learning.

The training will count as 7 hours of PD and you will receive a certificate of attendance for your records. For those BAS wishing to count this Masterclass towards their ongoing supervisory status, an online quiz will be provided and must be completed.

No prior knowledge of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is required to attend this session. Nor is their a requirement to be a Board Approved Supervisor, although this training is an AHPRA approved Masterclass for BAS.

Morning and afternoon tea will be provided. Please bring your lunch, or alternatively there is a café nearby where you can purchase something delicious.
